THE INCONSOLABLE KING (an original tale) adapted by Amy Friedman and illustrated by Jillian Gilliland The king was grumpy. He was tired of eating, snoring, sitting, standing, thinking. He was bored with jousts and feasts. Princes brought him curious animals, and princesses sang to amuse him. Knights brought beautiful birds that cooed and preened, trying to amuse him. The royal cook baked cakes and pies, eclairs and cookies and muffins. But nothing brought even the tiniest smile to the king's face. As the king grew grumpy, he grew selfish and inconsiderate. Everyone was miserable. Christmas was coming, and no one could be merry with their king so miserable and mean. Nobody knew what to do to console him.
