TWO local artists aged in their late 70s are proving it is never too late to pick up the paintbrush.

The pair will present a selection of paintings at the Brush With Life exhibition beginning this Thursday at Ellis House in Bayswater.

David Hinchliffe (76) of Morley and Bob Abrahams (78) of Subiaco have been painting together for about 20 years, providing support, and criticism when necessary, as they share their love of impressionistic art inspired by nature.

Hinchliffe, president of the Bayswater Art Society, said he retired from the workforce 20 years ago to take up art on a full-time basis.

“Bob and I paint together at least twice a week and every Thursday we paint outdoors – if it’s wet we set up a vase of flowers inside,” Hinchliffe said.

“It’s a hobby, something we just love to do; some people like to play bowls – Bob and I like to paint.

“We know each other well enough to criticise each other’s work and we always try to help one another.”

Abrahams, an artist in residence at Ellis House, took up painting in his 40s when he decided to embark on a sea change and leave the corporate world behind.

“I used to think that if something wasn’t logical it had no relevance to my life,” Abrahams said.

“I went to TAFE to study art which took me on a new journey, which has been life-changing.”

The Subiaco artist has enjoyed a lot of success with his art and this year won the WA Art Society’s annual Plein Air (plain air) award.

Brush With Life runs from Thursday August 20 to Sunday September 6.
