Now that we know Baz Luhrmann’s lurid epic Australia is complete balls, it is a perfect time to look at some more nigh-on forgotten Aussie flicks that definitely deserve your attention and clearly illustrate how we can produce great films without the dubious ‘help’ of Hollywood.

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past year, you would have been hard-pressed trying to escape the hype surrounding Baz Luhrmann’s Australia.
Whether it becomes another classic in the same league as Gallipoli or Picnic at Hanging Rock remains to be seen.

Documentaries aren’t always stuffy educational exercises made solely for the cerebral enjoyment of academia (thereby boring the pants off anyone who doesn’t have a keen interest in sedimentary rock or the mating rituals of the Galapagos vampire finch).
In fact, many documentary projects can be far more daring and entertaining than the latest new releases down at the local DVD store..... more »

This fourth and final ‘must-see’ list contains a whole swag of different stuff. Some are well worth a look, and the others – whilst awful – still possess that certain ‘train wreck’ quality that makes them compulsively watchable.
