10 Things I Wish I Could Do... In Perth

OK I admit it. I’m easily influenced by TV and movies. I watch Miami Ink and for two whole weeks I am determined to be a tattoo artist. I watch Winnie the Pooh and get a mad craving for hibernation and honey. And just this weekend I watch ‘Hell on Wheels’, a documentary about a group of women in Austin Texas who formed an all-girl roller derby, and you guessed it – I decide to take up roller derby!

What is roller derby? Think fast-paced, sexy wrestlers on roller-skates, violence in cute matching outfits emblazoned with wild and wacky nicknames like Punky Bruiser, Miso Vicious, Varuca Assault, Ginjure Snaps and Peachy Mean. OMG it’s just my kinda thang! There’s just one problemo. No such thing exists in Perth. (Shock, horror). So rather than start my own league I decided to compile a list of worthwhile activities that Perth doesn't offer.

1. Roller Derby

Roller derby girl

An American-invented contact sport, roller derby is sports entertainment and is based on formation roller-skating around an oval track. Two teams face off at a time, fighting to see which team can make it around the track the most times.
The sport was revived in 2001 in Austin, Texas by ‘She-EO’s’ Anya Jack, April Herman, Heather Burdick and Nancy Lynn with TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls and has gained international popularity. There are teams in Australia, but not in Perth yet.

2. Bikram Yoga

Also known as hot yoga, Bikram Yoga was developed by Bikram Choudhury. Bikram Yoga is practiced in a room heated to 40°C with a humidity of 40%. The 90-minute classes include 26 postures and two breathing exercises.

3. AntiGravity Yoga

Classes use the AntiGravity hammock, a soft fabric hung from the ceiling, to perform yoga poses and suspension techniques. Participants practice traditional yoga postures as well as exercises derived from dance, Pilates, and strength conditioning. Results are said to include increased flexibility and strength, better alignment and agility and a creative and fun workout.

4. Stunt School

Be like stunt experts Jackie Chan or Zoë Bell with Stunt Academy. The nationally recognised training program offers everything from agility, tumbling and rope work to theatrical fighting, film scenes, wirework, abseiling, stunt driving, high falls and horsework.

5. Trapeze School

The flying trapeze is a weighted, horizontal bar used by aerial acrobats.
The performer uses the swinging trapeze bar to ‘fly’ across to the potential ‘catcher,’ utilizing a multitude of tricks.

5. Bungee
The bungee chord is made from material similar to that used for bungee jumping. The performer uses its bounce to propel themselves through an array of movements with a dance like effect, dipping and gliding through aerial manoeuvres, suspended for moments at a time. Participants learn to dip, dive and roll their way through an exciting assortment of tricks.

6. Find Free Parking

You Heard Me PERTH.

7. Skiing & Snow Boarding

No snow – no ski.

8. Punk Rock Aerobics

Punk Rock Aerobics is the ‘work out that rocks out’. According to the website, Punk Rock Aerobics is not sucky classes full of braindead bimbos in spandex thongs. PRA is an hour and a half cardio and strengthening class that will have participants po-going and skanking their butts off.

9. BASE Jumping

BASE Jumping is jumping off fixed objects with a parachute. Like a building, a bridge, a mountain etc.

10. Zorb

“Zorb is the sport of rolling down a hill inside a giant inflatable ball and where New Zealand, once again leads the world in stupid things to do while you're on a vacation.” See it. Believe it.

Ha! Number 6 for the win :)

I don't think the parking situation will ever get better though (the hearts of parking inspectors are certainly not becoming any softer). Perhaps we can all afford Segways one day (http://www.segway.com/).

I agree. Number six is the winner.
To think that even the the fringes of the city itself (ie Subiaco, Leederville, Mt Lawley) are predominantly paid parking is greatly disturbing.
Give it a few years and even the likes of the final frontiers of Perth suburbia (think Ellenbrook and Brighton) will be charging for an hour's use of bitumen space!

The Zorb ball is where it's at. Gee whiz!

Free parking - I suggest we vote with our engines and make joondalup or another shopping precinct our preferred shopping place. I already avoid the city because of the parking situation and I encourage everyone else to do the same.

Perth City Council has spoken. They dont want business in Perth.

Joondalup will be having paid parking introduced shortly, works on meters start this month.

I'm all for the Bikram Yoga. I think it could become really popular and its realistic. Parking and skiing are about as likely as each other.

Things you cant do in Perth...... go a day without hearing someone complain about what we don't have in Perth! I reckon what we do have outweighs what we dont.
Suerely there is a degree of irony in this article?

Had 20years in Melbourne, I miss the South Melbourne markets & all cheap places where you can buy seconds in shoes, clothing and just about anything else. Dandenong markets cheap for meat, vegetables and clothing Perth doesn't have anything like that, spearwood markets (when open) are a joke, sometimes things are dearer than the supermarkets unless you want to go for a drive in the hills thats the only cheap place for vegies and fruit

I think the City of Perth are trying to scare people out of the Perth CBD unlike the ads they sometimes put on the TV saying to come into the city. Who in their right mind would want to go into the city to do anything (not that there is much to do there anyway!) when you have to pay for parking even on the weekend! I even steer clear of the new Convention Centre and any events held there because you pay for your tickets to the event then get slugged again to park at the event!

We got the Zorb balls - We're just looking for the land to open the park. Any one know any hilly land for sale?

I wonder if whoever posted this blog found out that a short time later a group of excited ladies met for the first time and strapped on skates that had been missing from their feet for too many long years. The first league of roller derby for Perth was formed in July 2008 and we LOVE IT!! It is the best sport I have ever played. It has changed everything from my fitness, to my appearance, to my outlook on life, to my friends. We have the passion to keep this sport going and to encourage more adventurous women of Perth to join us. Your life will change, even if you are simply a spectator of the sport. But why not try tying on some skates and getting out on the rink? Join us at Morley Rollerdrome on the first Sat of every month at our Perth Roller Derby Presents social skate nights! WOOHOO!! Bring it on ladies! ;)

Zorb balls? You could even have kept it simple by listing something simple like shopping on a Sunday (anywhere except the city) or night clubs. Perth still seems to be without even the simplest of things especially entertainment.
