"Fishing is as fun as watching paint dry"

If you are new to fishing or just not sure where to fish then yes, fishing will probably turn out to be as fun as watching paint dry. In fact it can be downright frustrating, especially if you try fishing during this winter months in the Swan River anywhere from Heirrison Island near the Causeway, Riverside Drive, Barrack Street Jetty, near the bridge near Millpoint Road all the way to Mosman Bay.

For one, you can forget about catching marine fish such as tailor, herring, trevally, flathead, whiting or maybe even bream during the winter months up until maybe around October. The reason being is most of the Swan River, especially if you are fishing from the shore, is fresh water. Yes, one interesting fact about our Swan River is that there is a seasonal change to the salinity of the river. During the winter months when there is a bit of rain, the flow of the water pretty much prevented most of the sea water from entering the system making the Swan River mostly fresh water.

Another thing that you can be sure to always be around when fishing in those areas is the plague number of blowfish/pufferfish, or what is locally known as the blowie.

I know many of those who fish hate the blowie, but it is not only cruel to leave it to die on the shore when you catch them but it also creates a risk for pets like dogs and cats as they are extremely poisonous and could kill our four legged friends.

So please release them instead of leaving them to die on the shore. Their numbers are naturally controlled by the amount of food available in the river.

But ... all is not lost, there are many good places you can go to fish, one of them is at Fleet street, Fremantle.

You can see the picture by going to Google Street. There is ample parking and also decent public amenities such as toilets. It is also great to be able to spend time out with the family, especially on a nice sunny day.

But anyway go to this link google map and on the map, click the button street view. Then put Fleet Street, Fremantle in the search box next to the image google map Australia and click search map. A map of the area will be seen and just click on Fleet Street on the map and see a 3D view of the area.

You can catch trevally quite easily there by using prawn as bait and a size 4 hook with a running ball sinker heavy enough to chuck the line about 30-40m. Please note however that there is a size and bag limit for trevally in Perth, namely, at least 25cm and maximum of 8 fish per person for silver trevally.

For complete guide please refer to the "Recreational Fishing Guide for West Coast Region" from the department of fisheries.

I'd like to see if their was nothing else to eat on this earth but fish if Crystal would starve to death. Fishing is the most relaxing thing, sitting in the boat, listening to the water lap lap along side the boat, a friendly dolphin comes over for a look see, sometimes with their baby. The odd seal also comes near. Love it when the whales come up to you, look you in the eyes, beautiful. Sometimes its a bit scary as they love to scratch their back on the hull of your boat. Most times I don't fish, hubbies doing that, I just like getting away from the police/ambulance/fire brigade sirens that roar up and down Rockingham Road, peace and tranquillity on the ocean nobody but him and me. Beautiful

1) I certainly would not starve to death, the abundance of fruit and vegetables will keep me healthier and live longer than anyone who is eating meat and fish.

2) It isnt very relaxing for the poor fish who is having a sharp metal bar ripped through its head as it meanders through its life.

I am guessing as you talk wistfully of the beauty of the whale, you would be opposed to the killing of them? Please explain the difference between a fish and a whale..or for that matter..a human?

Fish can be eaten just like chicken, cows, pigs, ducks and they taste pretty good too. Crystal, you have to accept it that no matter how hard you try to impress your belief on us non-vegan we will still eat other animals. I hope being a vegan also applies to not using/consuming animal products like ugg boot, leather handbags, shoes, wallet, honey, silk, anti-wrinkle creams, quilt made of downs, colgate propolis toothpaste, beeswax, many red color dyes, shampoos, lipstick, which typically contains carmine. What is it? It involves 70,000 bettles to get a pound of red dye. What about people who need insulin? Should we just let them die? Any of your shampoo have keratin? Here, you might be interested in this to help you better practice your belief

By the way, any of your furniture/house made out of wood? How is a tree different from an animal? They are living things too. How do you justify killing one and not the other to live?

I love fish. As with so many things, sustainability is the key.

I read somewhere (but the author may have got it wrong, so don't quote me) that Confucius liked to fish with a line and not a net, he believed the fish should be given a sporting chance :)

Crystal should get a real life instead of living like a rabbit!

Thank you Patrick, unfortunately vegans have absolute tunnel vision on life, they think that vegans rule supreme. Whaling is deplorable, the way they harpoon the whale with a explosive tip is horrible, the shock kills them then if not dead they haemorrhage internally and bleed to death in utter agony. They've recorded the dying cries of whales, you wouldn't want to listen Crystal, makes your blood boil. But as far as fishing, all caught fish on our boat are spiked (brain), throat cut and die instantly with dignity. Confucius was right - fish with line, hate nets, they kill smaller fish, dolphins, sharks, turtles etc

"patrick" thanks for your informative post, I in fact do try to avoid all of the areas you have mentioned I dont claim to be perfect and I no doubt miss some things but once I learn I try to avoid. "Whats the difference between killing a tree and an animal?" It really is quite simple ... a tree or vegetable does not have a central nervous system therefore does not feel pain. "Bignana" I do not see myself as supreme .. quite the opposite in fact. I am simply a part of this earth and therefore do not have the right to murder other creatures for my pleasure. You talk of whaling being barbaric but your fish are spiked. Tell me are they spiked after flailing around in agony silently screaming as your piece of steel rips through their head/mouth/eye and they are dragged and jerked through the water to the peace and calm of being murdered on your boat. With dignity..you cannot be serious.

Whale...fish...human...difference?

I find fishing boring at all times. I find watching paint dry infinitely more exciting.
I do, however, enjoy eating fish. I need the Omega 3 you see.
I think there is a difference between being a cannibal and being a carnivore. At the same time, I really think we should cut down on the amount of meat we eat and up the veg count.

Crystal, your vegan efforts are to be praised, but don't forget what even most fish eat....
And don't fool yourself about plants having no central nervous system etc...there is much we don't know yet as mere humans, but it is scientific fact that plantlife does indeed feel or register pain, and responds to different human behaviour, even to the point of recognition of someones 'vibe' after repeated 'meetings'. So where does that leave us???....chaotic diversity in everything on this planet, including in attitude and belief (including yours) are to be respected, they are what allow us to keep evolving and learning and surviving. Choose your battles love, its a bit rude simply going around calling people murderers for catching/eating fish. The creation of your food comes from no kinder sources if you think about it enough....next time you plunge fresh baby carrots into boiling water to cook or eat raw plants in their embryonic stage such as beans and peas after they are skinned alive.

I also need my Omega 3, you may not be aware that you can get better and cruelty free omega 3 by having "Flaxseed" capsules, same price as fish based capsules, but better for you and no murder required. Also flaxseed has a number of other properties that are even better for you (skin, hair, internal, etc). RE the cannibal comment, my apologies, I was referring to the killing of them rather than the eating of them. I see no difference in killing a whale as killing a fish, and if we are comfortable to kill them .. how big of a step is it to killing a human? Also if you are concerned about the enviroment, one of the biggest things you can do for it is to reduce your meat intake, the damage caused by meat farming etc is huge (not to mention the improvement in your health).

One of the reasons I go fishing is to enjoy the peace and quiet and get away from whingers like Crystal.

"mercedeswendy"...

1) do not patronise me with terms such as "love"!

2) It is not scientific fact

3) It may be rude to call people murders...but, that IS a scientific fact, people fishing are murdering their prey...and in many cases torturing them too (and then have the temerity to judge and abuse people who "fish" for whale meat).

"mark"...
Enjoy your peace and quiet...im all in favour of that...but do you really need to torture and murder another living creature to do it?

fishing is murder?, nah, the thing about being a fish is that unless you're at the top of the food chain there is always a bigger fish wanting/waiting to eat you. If I catch a fish am I depriving one bigger fish of a meal?... or am I saving the lives of countless smaller fish. The way i see things I may be some sort of fish hero, the only fish i don't eat are the vegetarian ones cause i cant tempt them with baits of their fellows.

give man food and he will for one day, teach him to fish and he will eat for the rest of his life
