EIGHT Nowergup residents asked questions about a proposed limestone quarry on 2350 Wanneroo Road at Tuesday night’s Wanneroo Council, with many more residents from the area in the public gallery.
They raised concerns about environmental protection of the area, the potential for their houses to be damaged through blasting at the quarry and the number and nature of submissions made to council regarding the matter.
Greg Boyd said he lived in Kallaroo when the Hillarys Shopping Centre was built and blasting had caused substantial cracks in his house.
“What will happen here when I have quarrying on my back fence?” he said.
Sabine Winton, who had also submitted a series of questions before the meeting, asked how the council intended to protect the natural assets of the area, and if an assessment had been done of how the operation of the quarry over 20 years would affect the area.
The application was referred to the WA Planning Commission last November, but the matter has yet to be considered by Wanneroo Council.
The City of Wanneroo administration asked that the WAPC defer consideration of the application until it had a chance to report to the council.
