KWINANA MLA Roger Cook has labelled the live-export trade as abhorrent and says rather than moving the trade from Fremantle to Kwinana, more meat packing jobs should be created in Western Australia.

He was opposed to the trade because he was concerned about the welfare of the animals and said the Kwinana community was not in favour of any move of the industry to the Cockburn Sound.

The town was flagged by the industry as a possible future hub of the trade, which could be based at the proposed James Point private port currently under consideration by the State Government.

“I have a couple of concerns. I find the whole notion of live sheep export abhorrent and I am concerned about the welfare of the animals and I’d rather see jobs in relation to meat works kept in WA.”

Mr Cook added he supported the protest group formed by local residents who were opposing any plans to move the trade to Kwinana.

But if the trade was moved to Kwinana he wanted guarantees from government and industry that they would keep off Thomas Road, which was close to residential properties.

“I want assurances from the industry and the government that they would avoid using Thomas Road like the plague, and develop a transport corridor, so lives aren’t endangered,” he said.

A spokeswoman for Transport Minister Simon O’Brien said the State Government was currently assessing port requirements for the export task facing WA over the next 50 years but would not comment on whether Kwinana was preferred over Fremantle.

The assessment would include looking at the best options for the livestock export industry and Government was committed to consulting with the community and industry on the issue.

Mr Cook said the community should be active on the issue but he would not go as far as to say it was another industry being ‘dumped’ in Kwinana.

“Kwinana is obviously a most important piece of infrastructure for WA.

“But I think the issue is we don’t want people saying ‘no’ to this here, or in Fremantle, and then having it moved somewhere else.

“I don’t think it is inevitable that the industry will move to Kwinana – but it’s important the community puts the Government on notice.”

How frustrating that there remains members of the farming community scared and defensive when it comes to the subject of the banning of live export here in Australia. It makes it very obvious that far more information needs to be provided to these people as it is a true misunderstanding to believe that the end of live exports would be the end of the farmers' livelihood.
We want to see australian abbatoirs back in full force providing jobs to our people, we want the horrendous level of animal cruelty involved stopped and through this, australian sheep and cattle farmers can then rest in the knowledge that the animals they have worked hard to raise will not be meeting a painstakingly drawn out and torturous end to their innocent lives. Stop Live Exports, WSPA, Animals Australia and the RSPCA can all answer questions and concerns.

It is 2010, and I can't believe that the cruel act of transporting livestock, is still allowed to happen. We all know the reason for live trade, is for the barbaric culture of certain countries. We would not let animals be killed in this manner, in any western country, so why do we send these animals, knowing full well that they will have to suffer in so many ways, before finally meeting thier fate. We have all seen the dreadfull films, taken secretly, by tv people, showing not only the horrific transport, but the disgusting treatment they recieve when they reach the country they are sent to. It's no answer, saying that farmers would go broke, if live trade was stopped. If every farmer in the world stopped, livetrade, it would then become the problem of these barbarians, who end up killing them. Why should thier culture, have to make us do, something, that we all know is so wrong, and cruel.

I am amazed that people giving their thoughts do not have the intestinal fortitude to give their full or real name. In an ideal world it would be great to process all the sheep here, but it's not what the customer wants. Without the live export trade many farmers would go broke. Guess where our food comes from? Yep Farms and if we don't have a viable farming Industry we loose the wonderfull quality of food we enjoy in Australia.

At last a polititian who knows the truth.

At last a polititian who speaks the truth.

At last a polititian who isnt afraid of standing up for what is right.

The live trade is cruel. It serves to make a few company owners very wealthy at the expense of jobs for Australians and causes immense suffering to the animals.

This Liberal Govt panders to the greedy selfish live exporters and the vile cruel trade will get moved- simply to keep it away from prying eyes which tell the truth to the public.
