PERTH’S Steven Jones was the youngest competitor to win the Quit Targa West Rally on the weekend.

Driving his Nissan GTR Skyline, the 24-year-old took the honours in the Competition Modern class ahead of Jim Richards (Porsche 911 GT2) and Kevin Weeks (Lamborghini Superleggera).

This year the rally took in roads in the Kalamunda, Gidgegannup and Chittering regions over Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

While it was a successful weekend for Jones, it was a different story for Bill Buys and his son Robert Buys, who crashed their Proton Satria GTI on the Zig Zag leg of the race on Friday.

Buys, Community Newspaper Group’s motoring editor, was treated at the scene before being taken to Royal Perth Hospital. He was admitted to the trauma ward with serious but not life-threatening injuries and is reported to be recovering well.

He will remain in hospital for some time.

Former World Rally Championship driver Alister McRae dominated the Competition Classic class, while Kym Illman took the honours in the Challenge Modern class in his Porsche 997 Turbo.

Andy Van Kann won the Challenge Classic class in his Toyota Levin.
