LIKE Nicole Kidman’s character Lady Sarah Ashley in Baz Lurhmann’s hotly-anticipated blockbuster epic Australia, Western Australia’s Kimberley region will take you on a journey of self-discovery.

The red and rugged landscape, and clear blue skies are so vast that it’s easy to believe you are the only person on Earth.

In fact, the locals think there is a traffic jam if they see another car every 30 minutes.

The region is steeped in frontier history and breathtaking natural wonders.

This ancient land also holds mystical stories, deeply embedded with the world’s oldest living culture – Australia’s Aboriginal people.

Take your own journey of self-discovery along the famous Gibb River Road, which travels some 660km through the central Kimberley Plateau, from King Sound at Derby in the west Kimberley, to the Cambridge Gulf at Wyndham in the east, and see some of the magnificent landscape that inspired Luhrmann to film Australia.

One of the best-known natural attractions along the way is Windjana Gorge, home to countless trilling birds and freshwater crocodiles, which are often spotted catching |the sun’s rays on the riverbanks.

The Gibb River Road is best travelled between May and October, when the rain of the wet season has subsided and the road – much of which is dirt and gravel – is accessible.

Tackle the Gibb by four-wheel drive on a tour, or self-drive for more adventure.

Make sure to check out some of the amazing gorges and waterfalls along the way.

At night, stay at one of the cattle stations or camp under a blanket of stars.
